Help people who try to clear their debts, says MP.

Help people who try to clear their debts, says MP. Labour MP, Stephen Ladyman, has used an adjournment debate in the House of Commons to call for people who do their best to repay their debts to be given a chance to repair their credit rating.

“Credit is a vital part of modern life and too many people are being treated as Financially Untouchable or Funts. Funts who do their best to repay what they owe and are responsible in addressing their debts should be treated differently to people who are feckless or reckless. I want more help and information for people who have debt problems to stop them becoming Funts, but I also want Funts who do the right thing to be treated better by the financial services sector than those who don’t. They should be able to earn a clear credit rating not punished. ” said Dr.Ladyman after the debate.

“This is a problem that is now facing hundreds of thousands of people. It affects people in all walks of life and being treated as a Funt can have an impact that is out of all proportion to your original mistake. And its made worse by the fact that people who try to do the right thing do not get the recognition they deserve."

it appears from your reply that you have got your life and financies under control, i am extremely pleased for you and wish that the rest of us had such a level head but unfortunatly life has a bad habit of biting you on the ass just at the point of thinking that both ends are meeting you find out that some one has cut the line and off you go sailing away into the (very scary) unknown. I have worked my whole life and never asked for anything from anyone i have never claimed benefits either, i do ask however that in this time and age that we are approaching with this financial crunch that more people have a better understanding that this isnt on the whole one persons fault and that given a choice would rather be working for a better future.

Oh how our fantastic government has to legislate for everything! But anyway...

In my experience (I used to collect mortgage arrears in a former life) people who geniunely are trying to pay and settle debts are treated differently to the "won't pays" and a lot of effort is spend on making sure the 2 groups are not mixed up.

My advise to anyone who is struggling to maintain payments is speak to your creditors before it gets to the point of falling behind. It is difficult to pick up the phone initially but you will be likely to be pleasantly surprised with their reaction and find it takes a lot of stress from the situation.

I agree there needs to be consistency across all lenders and not all companies are as responsible as the one I worked for (a high street bank that I won't name) but that's what the consumer credit act is for.

well said that man. I am in debt and will be for a few years to come. I have had to sell my house and am still waiting to see if the council will rehome us, we tried to rent a property but have been refused because we have a bad credit score, although all our debts were paid monthly and never missed and we had no mortgage arrears we are penalised for trying to get on the straight and narrow again. There needs to be a line drawn between refusing to work and pay and those working and repaying

Justice for Funts

Justice for Funts We've started a petition on the Downing Street website and your support would be very gratefully received.

Many people who have had difficulty repaying their debts are treated by the financial services industry as funts – or financial untouchables.

We believe that those who do their best to repay their creditors should be offered the incentive of no black marks, no being treated as financially untouchable and no waiting six years for credit blemishes to be overlooked. Being a funt can mean losing your home, being denied a mortgage or even rented accommodation. It can mean not getting a new job, being denied insurance, not getting a credit card – and being denied access to lower cost internet shopping. It can mean being denied a pension or savings account.

For most funts, who have learned a lesson and are proving they are willing to do their best to repay their debts, it is an unfair response. We hope the Government will help them.

Daily worry

Today I am really worried about Funts - financial untouchables

Today I am really worried about Funts - financial untouchables I am campaigning to reach out to “funts” - consumers deemed “financially untouchable” by financial services companies - and end discrimination against those who do their best to repay their debts.

Through funts.co.uk, I am gathering the necessary informational ammunition to fight for their rights with the politicians and businesses who have power of life and death over one of the most vulnerable sections of society.

Funts need a voice and that by working together, they can highlight the prejudice and inequity against which they have to live day to day life.

Can you imagine the situation if the following products were denied to you because of mistakes made years ago – even if you are now solvent:

➢ A new job
➢ A (re)mortgage
➢ A savings account
➢ Insurance of any kind
➢ Credit cards for internet shopping?
➢ A pension

All the nation’s funts should log on to funts.co.uk to give us the ammunition to convince the nation that funts are people too.

This information and campaign will support the full launch of ReallyWorried About Debt, coming soon.
